3. CHANEL Commission: Lina Lapelytė. We Make Years Out of Hours

Hamburger Bahnhof opens a new performance piece by Lina Lapelytė in its Historic Hall starting the first of May. 4. Gallery Weekend Berlin

Fifty Berlin galleries open their doors simultaneously for a three-day run of coordinated exhibitions during Gallery Weekend. MaHalla runs an eight-hour Sunday listening session in its main hall, focusing on ambient and experimental live sets from afternoon until night. Restaurant Suggestion:

Budapest Bagel Berlin (⭐4/5)

Recently back from New York, where bagels are taken seriously, I was craving something similar in Berlin and came across this spot not far from home, so I gave it a try. It’s a cute local place with very friendly staff. They serve bagel sandwiches with different fillings like omelette, cream cheese, and veggies, along with decent coffee. We tried two options: an omelette bagel with avocado, and a cream cheese one with cucumber. Both tasted good and hit the spot. One limitation is that there’s only one type of bagel available, poppy seed. It works, but having more variety would make a difference. We went on a Saturday morning right at opening, and within 30 minutes the place filled up quickly. They seemed a bit overwhelmed, so the food took a while, and there was a small mistake with our order. That said, the staff handled it really well, quickly correcting it and apologizing. That kind of attitude goes a long way. Overall, if you’re in the neighborhood and in the mood for a bagel, it’s a solid option, especially in good weather when you can sit outside. Expect to pay around €10 -12 for a bagel and a small coffee.

Adana Grill - Turkish Restaurant (⭐4/5)

I don’t usually make my way out to Charlottenburg for dinner since it’s a bit far from where I live, but visiting my uncle who lives there gave me a good excuse to take him out for Turkish food nearby. We ended up at Adana Grill, and honestly, it was a pleasant surprise. The place is spacious but was packed for a Wednesday night, which says a lot. Plenty of staff on the floor kept things moving quickly, and our Kurdish waiter was genuinely warm and attentive. There’s a big open BBQ grill visible behind glass, so you get all the atmosphere without the smoke filling the room. We went for the Adana Sarma Beyti, spicy minced lamb grilled on a skewer, wrapped in thin lavash, sliced into rounds, and served with yogurt, tomato sauce, and sizzling butter. Really good. The grilled chicken was also juicy and tender with no fatty bits, and they make their own Ayran too. The price is around €35 per person, and they take both cash and card.

I recently found this restaurant hiding in a Prenzlauer Berg courtyard, and the experience was a real delight. It’s casual fine dining done right: unpretentious, charming, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to come back. I visited in winter, but I can already imagine how lovely it would be in warmer weather, especially if they set up outdoor seating in the courtyard. The staff are attentive and warm without being overbearing, and the food justifies the price. You can choose à la carte, or a set menu at €79 per person, which covers a good spread of what the kitchen does best. We went for the octopus, which was so tender we actually asked the chef where it was from. The hazelnut ravioli had this rich, nutty flavor that reminded us of Nutella in the best possible way. The veal was solid, and the risotto with fried celery root had a really nice combination of ingredients. I’d warmly recommend this place, especially for a special occasion or when you have family or colleagues visiting the city.

I finally got a chance to try this hand-pulled noodle spot. The wave of hand-pulled noodles that took over Berlin in recent years seems to have cooled off a bit, but this place still delivers solid bowls, especially if you’re into beef dishes. The menu is straightforward with photos, which makes ordering easy. You can choose from a range of noodle dishes with toppings, as well as noodles in broth (which is what I tried, and you can see in the picture). The noodles are made fresh, and you can pick your style, flat or thin (8 different options!). Service is quick: you order at the counter and grab a seat. Prices are reasonable at around €15 per person, and card payment is accepted. The portions are generous, with plenty of meat, and the spice level is manageable, with the option to adjust using extra sauce. Overall, it’s a solid stop if you’re in the mood for noodles, but it’s not really vegetarian or vegan-friendly.

Stilbruch Kitchen - Brunch (⭐4/5)

This brunch spot in Friedrichshain, close to RAW-Gelände, is a nice option especially that you can reserve a table for Sunday brunch! The breakfast and brunch menu is quite extensive, with sourdough bread, avocado smash, and plenty of sweet and savory pancake options. What really stood out was the service: kind, attentive, and genuinely friendly. We ordered the Avocado Egg, blueberry pancake, and poached eggs. Everything tasted great, though the food took a bit longer to arrive. Prices are reasonable, around €15-€20 per person, and they accept cards. Overall, warmly recommended.

Mitho Cha! - Nepalese Restaurant (⭐4/5)

This Nepalese restaurant has two locations, one in Prenzlauer Berg and one in Neukölln. I visited the Neukölln branch. The space is large, clean, and they allow online reservations, which makes planning easy. The menu has a good variety of dishes. Some are similar to Indian cuisine but with their own twists and different levels of spice. We tried their national dish, which comes as a set of small plates with beef, chicken, vegetarian sides, soup, rice, and a type of bread. They also have this available as vegan. It is a nice way to try several things at once. We also ordered the fried duck in a curry-style sauce and nuts, which was quite good. The staff are friendly and speak English, the prices are around €23 per person including a soft drink, and they accept cards.

Restaurant Suggestion:

Polish Dainty (⭐4/5)

This is a very unpretentious restaurant focused on one of Poland’s most loved foods: pierogies. They offer a good range of options, served in portions of 3, 5, or 8, and you can mix and match, which makes it easy to try different fillings in one visit. There are only two meat options, but plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices. They also have a sweet pierogi section, with fillings like cottage cheese and blueberry. The staff were friendly and spoke English, which made things easy. I tried several varieties, and the meat pierogies and the Italian ones (with melted cheese and tomatoes) stood out the most. Prices are on the lower side (€14.5 for 8), and 8 pierogies is more than filling. They also offer a selection of Polish soups. I didn’t get to try them, but they looked solid. All soups are meat-based. Card payment is accepted.

Saravanaa Bhavan (⭐4/5)

This place was recommended by an Indian friend specifically for their dosas. It’s a South Indian restaurant that claims to be the largest Indian restaurant chain in the world, with locations across several countries. The restaurant itself is quite spacious, and the staff were very friendly. The menu is fully vegetarian and vegan. Their specialty is dosa, like the one in the photo. You’ll find both traditional versions served with ghee and more modern twists topped with melted cheese, including Gouda. They also offer thalis, which I found a bit overpriced for what you get, but the dosas were reasonably priced. One odd thing was a separate section of the menu dedicated to Chinese food, which we skipped entirely. They accept both cash and cards. Average price is around €20 per person including a soft drink.

FIVE ACE Food & Drinks (⭐4/5)

This is a local mom-and-pop shop run by a couple. They serve mainly Vietnamese dishes like pho and bánh mì, along with a few sushi items. It feels more like a Vietnamese deli than a restaurant, as they also sell packaged goods and have limited seating. It's one of those places you grab lunch mid-week during your work break. I've tried different dishes here. The bánh mì is decent, and the pho is acceptable. They also have bánh bao, Vietnamese steamed buns which are very soft and fluffy. The prices are very reasonable and on the lower end, plus they accept cards. They've got different sweets too. One nice touch is that the kitchen is open, so you can see inside and know they're keeping things clean.

Tanzolymp is an international youth dance competition for dancers aged 10 to 21, held in Berlin under the motto "Dance as a world language." 3. One Billion Rising

One Billion Rising is a global movement that brings people together in public spaces to dance against violence against women and for respect and equality. Restaurant suggestions are back, and I’ve got a good one for this week:

Bertie - American Restaurant (⭐5/5)

I'd heard good things about this restaurant, and whenever I passed by, there was always a queue. Finally got a chance to check it out, and it was a pleasant experience. First of all, there are no reservations, and there's usually some waiting time, even if you go for dinner at 6:30 pm on a Saturday (we waited 10 minutes for a table to free up). The food is sort of an elevated American fusion style, with attention to harmony of tastes. We tried the Stracciatella with persimmon and peanut chili oil (€16 - my favorite), Lettuce salad with Dijon dressing (€8 - nothing amazing but good), the grilled oyster mushroom with creamed corn (€22 - the BBQ'd mushrooms tasted like meat with spices, which was surprisingly pleasant), and the Beef on Weck (€18 - a Western New York State sandwich, particularly popular in Buffalo). Overall, it was worth the wait, the staff were nice, and the dishes were made to be shared. The average price per person is €45, including a drink, and they only accept cards. The menu rotates from time to time, so I will be back to try their new dishes.

With nothing to scroll, I paid more attention to my surroundings, felt calmer, and actually connected with the people around me instead of my phone. Less background anxiety. More presence. More real life.

• 💺 More expensive public transit: €63 Deutschland Ticket, €4 AB ticket, €5 ABC ticket

• 🍽️ Reduced VAT in cafés and restaurants: previously 19%, now 7%

• 💶 Higher minimum wage: previously €12.82, now €13.90 per hour

• 🩹 More expensive health insurance; the starkest price hike in years. Use the health insurance calculator to see the new prices, and ask an expert if switching to another insurance makes sense.

• 👷‍♀️ Higher minimum salary for Blue Cards: previously €48,300, now €50,700

Seoul Garden - Korean Restaurant (⭐4/5)

This is a solid Korean restaurant with three locations in Berlin. The Charlottenburg branch stands out with a broader menu and more options compared to the Prenzlauer Berg location. One thing I really like is the set menu style, where your main dish comes with a variety of small side dishes. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options alongside Korean classics like bibimbap. They also offer Korean BBQ, which comes in at around €40 for two people. We tried the classic bulgogi with beef and a spicy beef stew with glass noodles, both comforting and well balanced. You will also find Korean spirits and beers on the menu. Overall, it is a reliable choice when you are craving Korean food. The staff is friendly, speaks English, accepts cards, and prices average around €25 per person including a drink.

Restaurant Suggestion:

Les Valseuses - French Restaurant (⭐4/5)

This is a classic French restaurant serving familiar French dishes with a few nice twists on the basics. The atmosphere feels like a proper bistro. It is a bit lively, slightly loud, with dim lighting. The service is friendly, and while the place looks small from the outside, there is more seating toward the back. It was fairly busy on a Thursday night and they forgot our side salad, but nothing serious. The house wine was good, though I was a bit disappointed that natural wine is only available by the bottle. They offered it by the glass since we asked, but at €12 per glass it did not feel worth it. The appetizers were very enjoyable. The salmon was tasty, and the escargot were classic snails baked with garlic butter, with a great sauce for dipping the excellent bread. The steak was excellent and reasonably priced at €33 including fries, and the mussels had a nice spicy kick thanks to the nduja sausage. We did not try dessert, but given the kitchen, it is likely worth it. They accept cards, and the average price per person is around €50.

LOUMI- One Michelin Star ⭐ Restaurant

I recently had a chance to eat at LOUMI, one of the Michelin star restaurants in Berlin. When you go to places like this, it always raises the question of whether the price is really worth the experience, and in many cases, once you pass a certain euro threshold, I do not think it is. The restaurant offers a €150 set menu per person, along with a selection of cocktails, wines, and champagnes ranging from €12 to €22/per glass. There are also optional extras, like oysters and Wagyu beef (€69), which we ended up ordering because we still felt hungry after finishing the set menu. As explained on their website, their cuisine is based on French traditions, refined by Japanese precision, and inspired by Nordic and Asian techniques, with a strong focus on sauces.

The most interesting ingredient for me was Chinese artichoke, which I was trying for the first time. The duck with brioche for dipping into the sauce was excellent, and the Wagyu beef was superb, though the fact that we had to order extra did not sit well with me. The desserts were also enjoyable.

The place itself is chill and laid back, without a fancy atmosphere, which I see as a positive. The selection of tableware and serving dishes is also well chosen and visually appealing. The staff were friendly and attentive, although I did feel a slight push toward ordering extras, which I did not particularly appreciate.

In conclusion, it was a nice experience and definitely worth trying. Would it be a revelation though? I do not think so.
