2. The Makropulos Affair: A Complex Inheritance Dispute and Opera of Love and Immortality
"The Makropulos Affair" is a unique opera that combines elements of crime drama, inheritance dispute, and meta-opera to explore the theme of human immortality. The story follows opera diva Emilia Marty, who inserts herself into a century-long inheritance dispute and uses her irresistible charm to achieve her cryptic goals. Marty is searching for an elixir that can extend life by 300 years, but when she finally finds it, she realizes the price of eternal life. Janáček's operatic adaptation of the play transforms the aloof frigidity and irony of the original play into a veritable tragedy that evokes sympathy for the lead character, who is unapproachable, weary, and emotionally impoverished.
