The artworks range from small collages and photography to large paintings, encouraging discourse on mental health, beauty standards, and identity. This inclusive and feminist exhibition celebrates equality and diversity, sparking conversations on interhuman relationships, love, acceptance, and tolerance regardless of gender or background. It deconstructs the patriarchal narrative that repressed female artists from participating in art history and replaces it with a democratic look on inspiring topics. Viewers are encouraged to question outdated and widespread narratives that exclude women and non-binary people from discussions on human experiences, shaping societal views on science, health, and culture. 5. "Өмә" Exhibition Highlights Russia's Colonial Past and Anti-Colonial Resistance
Despite the existence of over 185 ethnic groups in Russia, the country is largely perceived as "white" in the West, with many overlooking the oppression and even genocide of ethnic minorities. This narrative is also upheld by both the regime and opposition within Russia, who promote a view of Russia as an anti-colonial and anti-imperialist power. However, the "Өмә" exhibition showcases the historical continuity of Russian imperialism, including the recent annexation of Crimea, and highlights anti-colonial resistance within Russia. Through approximately thirty artistic positions from indigenous communities and persons with migrant identities, the exhibition reveals Russia's colonial past of deportation, forced assimilation, Christianization, russification, and extractivism. By developing methods of autoethnography and working with memory through archives, "Өмә" seeks to represent the complexity of Russia as a colonial realm and situates itself within the ongoing Russian colonial expansion and violence in different territories.
